The news from Ohinemuri is not very jicheering as far as the prospeck<b£an early development of the auriferous resource! of the district is concerned. The excitement created by the opening of Tairua and the really splendid results obtained at such an early stage from the Prospectors' claim has had the effect of attracting a great many miners from Ohinemuri—men who were beginning to settle down to work. In some instances claims hare been abandoned altogether, and in many others mere shepherding is being done, a portion of the men having left their mates to manage as best they can while they go to Tairua to spy put the land. This is unfortunate for Ohinemuri, as the diversion of population will militate seriously against the progress of the district. Of there are many parties, still at Ohinemuri who prefer to hold what they have to rushing after a mere shadow. But there is no question that the new field has very much unsettled the useful portion of the population as well as those who.,.are ever ready to rush after something new. If the Ohinomuri Prospectors' trial crushings produce payable resulls^a reaction will set in; a consummation devoutly wished for by numerousTiotel and storekeepers at Oh}nemuri, who hare now little to do beyond kicking their heels, "behind .counters to which visits are like those of angels, few and far between.
