THAMES BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor; Crs Brown, Butt, Macnab, and Eenshaw. The minutes of last meeting were read /and confirmed, •,, INFECTIOUS DIBEASES HOSPITAL. A letter from Dr Kilgour was read, in which he recommended that some arrangement should^ be made between the Hospital Committee and the Borough Council for the establishment and maintenance of a hospital for infection! diseases. .. ■ The Mayor explained that the lettft? bore special reference to measles. *: . Cr Eenshaw informed the Council h<m ~~' the cases already in hand, all of *rhich\ were from Ohinemuri, had been'dealt with. Cr Macnab said though the Hospital Committee were dealing with the present cases, they could not be expected to pay doctors' expenses if many occurred. Ke advised that the subject be let stand over, and it would come up for discussion again. It was decided that the Town Clerk communicate with Dr Kilgour, informing him that the Council had written to the .Central Board of Health with regard-to a building for contagious diseases. A letter from Mr McGowan drew th«\attention of the Council to the dilapidated state of Pollen-street footpath at the junction with Abraham-street; also, offering to erect a lamp-post if the Councilwould supply the light: Both subject* referred to.Works Committee. c " From the inhabitants of Beach road, near Abraham.street, for a standpipe for use of persons in the vicinity. Cr Brown thought the malter should stand over until the Council had full control over the ;work. The Mayor suggested that they sh/rald find out whether it was requisite, and then recommend its erection to the Government. The Town Clerk said nearly every standpipe erected had been & recommended by the Council. Eeferred to Works Committee. The residents' of Upper Albert-street requested the Council by letter to effect .some improvement to the road, which was nearly impassable. 7-: Referred to W.prks Committee, with power to act. : THE GEET-BTEEET BBlDtfE QUESTiOH". "H A letter was received from the, Parawai Board, tendering the £100 on account of the bridge, and asking the Council whether they would undertake the construe- " ition, of the Bo wen-street bridge, as they tcbuid only be expected to get the addi^| itional £50 on that condition. ■ The letteifl also stated that the Government had been -^ 'repeatedly asked for the other £100, and :that the Board was muph surprised to learn that the remaining £100 would only be granted subject to the two bridges >$eing Completed ' , - &%er * Hensh/tw ' tjbmtght -it-might be as well for the Council _to construct the bridge, as the Parawai Board had no hope of getting the £50 until it was built. ; Cr Butt said it was understood at the time that the two bridges should be * made. : The Mayor said Cr Butt was mistaken, in proof of which there was the letter from the Board stating that the members never dreamt of such a condition. Cr Brown coincided with the Mayor. He had a distinct recollection of all meet* r ings at which the matter had been , discussed. . , ■ The Mayor said %tj would get; the money without respect to the^ second bridge.'. The money would be forthcoming on the 10th of next month. Cr Macnab said these discussions were to no purpose. The Chairman of the Board and the Council could meet the Superintendent. . ' * Cr Brown proposed that the. proposal of .the Board respecting ;a second bridge could not bj? Entertained till the £50 was fancied over.*".*; \ --^It was ultimately decided simply to. acknowledge receipt of the letter. KABAKA CSSIK. ■ ' A letter from the Superintendent's , Office was read, notifying that £300. would be granted towards straightening the Elaraka Creek, provided the eSpent; . of the landowners was obtained. . / - The Mayor said the matter lay between ? Mr Rowe and his tenants; nothing coiikt be done until some arrangement was come /. to with the tenants. KiJIAXi. SOAD. . - : ■■ A letter from the Kauaeranga Board stated that the' Chairman would confer ' With the Mayor touching this road. Th« Clerk stated that the-estimated cost orshe road was £99 10s. It w«s decided that the work should be prqeeeded^with at once, and that tenders should be called for! V WAIOTAHI BOAD. The Foreman of Works reported on the cost of the road to meet that part of the WaiotaKi road already formed. It would cost The Mayor stated the work was a great necessity, and would last for a long time. . - - . , • Cr Brown suggested they should petition the Superfntendent oil his coming down aext week. He had about £15,000 to spend. If |;bey had not "any thing else-~ to ask for, they might ask his assistance in this matter: i , Cr Macnab thought that the town part of the road should be done by contract, and the upper by the Council. " ; Cr Senshaw thought the Provincial Council should complete the work they had begun.
