Auckland, This day. In the Supreme Court yesterday Edniond Percy Brett, late lieutenant of the navy, pleaded guilty to giving a valueless cheque at Tauranga, and was sentenced to nine months.
In the case of Alexander and Keil Ogilvie, for sheepstealing at Pukekohe, the grand jury returned no bill.
Henry Pettit pleaded guilty to attempting to extort money by threats from Mrs Clara Cornford. • Mr Hesketh addressed the Court in mitigation of punishment His Honor inflicted nine months.
William Wilkinson, alias Shingleton, charged with feloniously setting fire to a house on the Waiotahi Creek, in March, pleaded not guilty. The charge was proved, and the prisoner was sentenced to three years' penal servitude. In the Supreme Court to-day Hone Tareha for killing and stealing an ox, was found guilty. He was recommended to mercy on account of his ignorance. Sentencad to three months' imprisonment. The charge against Edward Martin for stealing £14 is proceeding. The City Council to-day interviewed the Superintendent relative to securing a title to the city endowments and getting police assistance, and a grant from the Eeserve towards repair of the main roads. They were told to put there applications in writing. Dunedin, This day. Three men w*re brought up. at the Court, yesterday, for breach of the railway regulations, in getting into a Carriage while in motion, through the window. The accused pleaded guilty, but the magistrates dismissed the cases* as the railway regulations were deficient and did not meet the cases.
Hori Eeri Tairoa intends calling a meeting of the natives of Canterbury and Otago, to be held at Otago Heads on the 24th May, to consider what steps are to be taken to secure payment of the two millions sterling claimed by him in 1872 as compensation for unfulfilled promises made to them by Colonel Wakefield, and Messrs ICemp and Mantell. At the meeting it is intended to collect money for the purpose of defraying the expense! of sending certain of their number to England to petition the Crown and Parliament on the spot, and to request Mr Mantell to go with them to advocate their claims.
Mr James JAdam, Immigration Agent for Otago, writing to a friend here, gays :— " New Zealand has enemies where she would least expect them. For example, the Lord Mayor of Lomdon said, the other day, he hoped the fate of the Cospatrick would be the means of turning the tide of immigration from ISew Zealand to Canada." This was said at a meeting held for the purpose of raising funds for the relief of sufferers by the loss of the Cospatrick. ' A committee of ladies waited on the Superintendent to ascertain what assistance the Government would be likely to give towards the establishment of a Servants' Home and Begistry Office. The deputation stated that £400 had been collected, and £100 more promised. His Honor promised to bring the matter under the notice of the Government. The Victoria Insurance Company lose £700 by the fire at Orepuku on Thursday last. A meeting of the Dunedin shareholders of the Greymouth Coal Company was held yesterday. Many shareholders expressed dissatisfaction with the way the mine was conducted, and stated the prospects of the'mine-to be good. When the railway is finished, which will be in six months, they will be able to raise 500 or 600 tons i per day. It was stated that one ton of Greymouth coal p ave 11,000 feet gas, while the Newcastle only gave 9,600 feet.
