Provincial Council Election.
The result of the voting at Shortland having been made known yesterday, the Mayor briefly thanked the electors for having placed him in so honorable a position, and assured, those who had voted against him that he would do all in his power to secure their confidence. (Cheers). Mr Eowe next addressed the crowd, and said there had been a malignant spirit shown by some of those who had opposed him, namely, Messrs Anthony, Bagnall and Speight. He stated of the former that Mr Anthony bad came to him after Mr Swan's death to know what he thought of his (Mr Anthony's) chances of securing the vacant seat. [iMr Anthony informed Mr Kowe that he was telling the biggest lie he ever told, when he said that.] Mr ft owe maintained what he had said to be true. Both gentlemen, after Mr. Eowe had concluded his address,. \>y some means got together, and from the appearance of things trouble seemed imminent, when the limbs of the law, headed by their SubInspector, parted the disputants. Mr Eowe was lifted on the shoulders of his supporters, and conveyed to a 'bus; Mr Davies the successful candidate was on the top of another, with a blue flag flying as an emblem of victory. There was a considerable amount of excitement evinced during and after the publication of the | poll, but order was well maintained by the police. The official declaration of the poll will take place on the 12th instant.
