THAMES BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting ot the Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Rowe,' Macnab, Anthony, Butt, Brown* Renshaw. * MINUTES. ' J "\- The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, after which a number of letters sent since last meeting. Amongst them was a report of the Local Board of Health to the Central Board, in Auckland,"setting forth the sanitary cohditioa of the place at present and the steps taken for the prevention of disease. This report was furnished at the request of the Central Board, expressed by letter. BOAD FOE THE WAIOTAHI. A letter, signed by forty-four: miners resident in Waiotahi Creek was read, asking the Council to construct a road from the present termination of the Waiotahi Road to Pollen street. Cr Brown suggested they should come to some arrangement so that the mine owners, the Provincial Government and the Borough Council should pay each a third of the cost of such a road. Cr. Anthony opined that little could.be expected from the mines on the Waiotahi. Cr. Brown thought differently. There was the Waiotahi Association, the Nonpareil and a number of tributes paying well. Beside there:was riot iuch^ a considerable?amount?of traffic* up the WaioKaraka before the road was made.
The Mayor^said^c; matter'should be referred to the Works Committee.
Cr. Brown suggested that the Committee should hare some idea of the wishes of the Council.
Cr. Macnab said it was desirable to make roads to the mines, but that it would not do to rob tjie ratepayers.. Cr. Brown said they would have little need of the ratepayers if it were not,for the mines. He would more that - the matter be referred to the Works Committee wiih instruction to confer with the mine owners as to their willingness to contribute towards the cost. ... : Seconded by Cr. Anthony, and carried. SUPPLY OE WATER FOE THE WHARF. A letter signed by fourteen owners and agents of vessels drew the attention of the Council to the necessity for a supply of water on the goods wharf. The Mayor said it was the Council's^ place to recommend this if they thought it necessary. It was decided to recommend this work to the Government. THE KARAKA ROAD. The Foreman of Works reported that the cost of reforming and metalling the Karaka road would be £99 9s. The Mayor said it was for- the Council to consider whether they could afford to expend £50, and they could then communicate with the Kauaeranga Board. Cr. Macnab: It is a most desirable work, there being a lot of traffic on the road, and it is at present in a, bad state. "VTe should give the miners up that creek a fair ■■-: share of the expenditure of the rate. i^ Cr Butt: I move that we pay half the cost of the jppad to the amount of £50, if the Kauaeranga give the rest. The motion was carried. HEALTH OFFICER'S REPORT. The report of the Health Officer, Mr John B. Mason, was read, and adopted. RATES COLLECTED. The Collector of Kates reported that the amount from rates collected within the Borough for the last month was £166. ''^ FIRE BRIGADE COMMITTEE. The report of the Fire Brigade Committee was read. It was agreed that the engine should be lent to the Shorthand contingent for the purposes of practice; •■y /\ ■■:■■ -;.■ • -FINANCE. "-..'■_■■/■:■ '■ The report of the Finance Committee was read, and the accounts passed for payment. NIGHT SOIL. Mr Cribb, cf Farawai, was the highest tenderer for night soil, offering Is 9d per load. George Waite tendered for the contract of carting the night soil at 15s per cubic yard. The tender was accepted. KARAKA CREEK. - Regarding" the straightening of, tjiis creek, the Mayor said he had communicated with Mr Sheehan, and had received; a telegram from that gentleman, to the following effect—"Expenditure of £300! approved, subject to consent of land; owners beinsr obtained. McLaren hasbeen instructed accordingly/ It -was;?a? very necessary work, one which it was; imperative should be done at once. Mr Itensbaw asked would the £300 bei considered part of the £750 which the \ Borough was to receive in June as the remainder of the grant voted by the; Council at last session.
; The Mayor said lie did not think it was intended to be part of the grant. H« had also communicated with Mr Sheehan in relation to this subject, and had receire.d a telegram to say that he would advise him (the Mayor) re Municipal grant. Cr. Howe said he had seen the battery owntrs up the cr«ek, and had appointed
to meet Mr McLaren to-morrow. The only difficulty in the way was with a tenant, and he (Mr Bowe) thought he 'should be able to overcome that. He ;tlid not, however, think the work would be performed for £300 or anything? like lit. . 7 ".
Ifc was ultimately decided th# the Mayor and Cr. Brown should waCupon Mr McLaren with Cr. Bowe to-morrow. This terminated the business, and tat Council then rose.
