THE GOLDEN CALF.
I visited the above mine yesterday, and descended into the deeper depths to view the workings, which are being pushed ahead vigorously, and so far with good result. The manager, Mr Thorn, is following up the reef from the main drive, which is in from the shaft 296 feet. He is also putting up a rise on the reet to connect with the upper level, to reach which a distance of 125 feet will have to be worked. At present the reef is about 8 feet wide, though it will of course vary slightly, and loots very promising so far as it has been worjeed. Just prior to my viait, a "shot had been put in, but although the face of the stone was considerably blackened by contact with the powder, gold was plainly discernible in the face. The country through which the reef passes is rather hard, but good progress is being made, and it is hoped that as work advances in this mine the prospecis will increase and repay many of those who have for long adhered to the opinion that the mine is a good one.
