Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to mark her sense of appreciation of Colonial statesmen and others by conferring dignities upon these faithful subjects. Amongst the recipients of the Queen's honors is Major Pichardson, the President of the Legislative Council of New Zealand. The Major is a gentleman highly esteemed by all who know him. He has served his Queen in the army, and during/a long residence in New Zealand he has taken an active part in politics, having been Speaker of the Otago Provincial Council, Superintendent of Otago, J&ember of the House of Bepresentatives, and subsequently called to the Legislative Council over which he has presided for some years, since the retirement of the Hon. Mr Bartleman. No man in the Colony wore worthily deserves a. mark of recognition such as that conferred, or will wear it with a better grace than the gallant old veteran who has been chosen by the Queen for a special mark of her favor.
