PER PRESS AGENCY.
Auckland, This day. A fire occurred in the Star Hotel, Newton, at one o'clock this morning. The landlord had been engaged bottling in the cellar store-room aftermidnight, and ituis supposed some straw accidentally ignited. After going to bed he heard a the bursting of bottles. He and found the store-room full of smoke and flames. He gave the alarm, and got Iris wife and children out. He then went upstairs andai"msed the lodgers, the fire meanwhile spreading so rapidly in "the wooden building that they were barely able to get downstairs to the street. One, unable to do so, jumped out of an upstairs window and sustained serious injuries. -He was picked up insensible and convoyed to tlie hospital. Another, named * Smith, was rery much burned. He went himself straight to the hospital, unobserved, and there was great anxiety throughout th» fire owing to fears that he was burned to death. The fire caught the adjoining building, occupied by Hemus, bootmaker. Both that and the hotel were completely destroyed. The exertions of the people successfully prevented the firo from further extending. The insurance is not yet ascertained. Dunbdin, Monday.
