Auckland, This day. Sir George Grey expressed a strong opinion on. the importance of every colonist, who had time and means, taking part in public. affairs, and said if his action in offering to take the Superintendency did any good by discountenancing the practice of proceeding home when a fortune was made in the colonies, he would be satisfied. .
In ibe Police Court, the charge against Diigald McNaughton, for alleged indecent assault, was dismissed. ; :
At the half yearly meeting of the Thames Gas Company, the balance-sheet showed £828 to the credit; of the profit and loss account. A dividend of four per cent, was declared, absorbing £758, It expected that next half year would yield a dividend of. six per cent. The report also expressed an opinion that the opening of the UppeV Thames would largely benefit the company by giving permanency to Grahamstown. The report *vas adopted. The dividend will be payable at the end of the week.
Wanganxji, Wednesday, s The Hawera correspondent of the Herald telegraphs that the natives at Opunake are again taking the law into their own hands. At Opunake they have taken possession of Mr Bayley's house, turning his servants out, and threatening to burn it down. Between Opunake and Stoney Kiver, as Messrs Broadbent and Diggs were bringing a lot of cattle, the natives took possession of several headshooting some and driving others inland, and refused to give them up. They have also driven off a lot of sheep. The Wanganui Rifle Association's annual meeting commenced to-day. The first match was the W.R.A. medal; ranges— 200, 500 and 600 yards; 8-inch bull's eye. At 200 yards, five shots at each range : Churton, 51; Campbell, 49; Wilson, 49. Second match j 400, 500 and 600 yards ; five shots at each range; prizes—£5, £3, and £2: Campbell, 53; Eeids2; Purnell, 50. Seventeen competitors out of 27 exceeded 40. The other matches are going on. Weather windy.
Wanganui, This day. The Wanganui Bifle Association—third match; 200 yards; 8-inch bull's-eye; 10 shots. G. Cummins, 35; Boss, 35; Roche, 35.
Match fourth—soo yards ;10 shots— Eeid, 38 ; G. Cummins, 35; Strachan, 33. The Cavalry match, over, hurdles, was won by Wairoa, with 281; Wanganui second, 273.
Wellington, This day. The Times says some unimportant telegrams were received, by the General Government from the Agent General early this week, but no-news of or from the Premier.
A deputation of merchants waited upon the Commissioner of Customs regarding the recently enforced regulations affecting the transhipment of dutiable goods. The Commissioner of Customs said the regu? lation would be modified, and was intended to apply only in cases where cases of dutiable goods had been opened on the voyage. A fresh circular to that effect will be issued. .
Lyttelton, Wednesday. The Grace, Darling ship parted her cable and went ashore at Rhodes Bay on the mud last evening. No damage was sustained, and she sailed for Dunedin. •
Dunedin, Wednesday. A verdict of wilful murder has been returned against Margaret Collins for the Tokomairiro infanticide case.
Dunedin, This day. The case. Carrick t Pyke is finished in the District Court. Judgment reserved. A rather sharp passage of arms took place during the hearing, between the bench and the bar. Mr Haggitt said Mr Barton was " no gentleman," and declined to speak to him except-in Court. Mr Barton accused Mr 'Haggitt of calling him " a damnable scoundrel" in an underbreath. Mi* Haggitt denied the accusation. Mr Bafchgate interfered, and tried to stop the argument by reminding cgupjsel they were not addressing, the jurj", ■ who mightbe influenced by their quarrels, Mr33ar£on said he could find twelve merchants in town with as much intelligence as Mr Bathgate. The cargo of the ship Auckland, for London, is Valued-'at £103,000.
