DEPUTATION OF MINERS.

A deputation of miners, headed by Charles O'Neill, Esq., M. H. R. for the Thames-District, waited upon Dr Pollen, acting Premier of the Colony, in the Traveller's Best Hotel, this afternoon, to ascertain from the Ministerial head, what •Act tne goldfield would be opened under. The reply of Dr Pollen was to the effect that the goldfield would be opened under the Goldfields Act of 1866. ; This will not be news to you, but the miners, I presume, wished to be satisfied from ihe Government itself that such was the case, or to make it pledge itself to the course proposed. Dr Pollen also said that no concessions would be granted to anyone who might hare made discoveries through breaking the law. The report of the Superintendents death created a profound sensation, and many expressions of regret were heard on all sides. On the news of the Superintendent s death being learned on board the Luna, Captain Fraser at once went to the Alert to proceed to the Thames. Sir Donald was not in apposition to leave at the present time, in view <?f the meeting with the Natives taking place to-morrow. He, however, I belieye^sent a letter of condolence by Captain Fraser for. Mrs Williamson. Mr A. J. Attorn and Mr J. E. Macdonald also proceed to Shortland in the Alert. /
