The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi.` FRIDAY, FEBRUARY, 12, 1875.

We understand that it lias been settled to open the Obinemuri Goidfield under tfte Goldfields' Acts. If.this has been | decided upon in deference to the oft-ex-presFed wish of the miners,,ire have no doubt the latter will be grateful to the Government. The very circumstances of the new field will render the administration merely experimental, and it may be found that modifications of the law will be required. Captain Fraser, senior, Warden of existing goldfields, has been deputed to attend to the wants of Ohinemuri field as soon as proclaimed, 'and until such times as the Government can se*e whether a new appointment will be. necessary. Captain Fraser. has had experience of the working - of the Goldfields Acts, and the Goldmining Districts Act. .He was appointed to take charge of Whangamata when that portion of the district was proclaimed, and we have no doubt that his experienced judgment and tact will be both called into exercise in dealing with circumstances as they arise on the new field. Without over-riding the law, it is quite possible for a Warden so tondminister the law that it will not be allowed I o press severely upon individuals. The Goldfields Act of 1866, under rigerous administration might be macte unduly aridunntces-

sarily severe, especially if full scope were allowed to initiate litigation on every occasion of a trifling breach of rules. We have no fear that^ it will be rendered obnoxious under Captain Fraser's regime, and as the miners them selves have expressed on several occasions a desire to see the field opened under this Act, the disposition evinced by the Government tp fall in with these views is evidence of their intention to rei?der every facility to the diggers to institute a thorough prospecting of the land.
