PER ANGLO-AUSTRALIAN PRESS TELEGRAPH AGENCY.
Auckland, This day. A well attended public meeting was held last night at which it was resolved to give a suitable reception to the Volunteer Representatives, and a complimentry ball. The magistrate expressed his regret, stating that he had known the prisoner and always considered him an exemplary man. Sir Donald McLean, Native Minister, telegraphed from Alexandra to - day : — "Had a satisfactory interview with Tawhaio. The first day's proceedings were more of a formal nature. The tone is good and the fact of the meeting from a Native point of view is significant of good. Further converse will take place to-morrow.—Donald McLean." Relative to the reported disturbance between the miners and Natives at Ohinemuri the Government hare received the following telegram:—"There is no disturbance between the miners at Ohinemuri. The Natives do not object to prospering. The surveys are stopped until Mackay arrives, as the Natives wish the boundaries to be moved further back in some places. Mackay proceeded immediately to the district." . Dunedin, This day. Of 40.000 shares in Albion Brewery Co. only 4,500 remain unapplied for. • Ulrich ; in the concluding part cf his preliminary report on the Otago Goldfield, to the Superintendent, says:—" The general result of my inspection may anticipate my full report in stating that I found the auriferous capabi'ities of the province in a far higher order than I was led to expect from current reports. Drift deposits seem to me practically inexhaustible ; while as regards auriferous quartz reefs opened, they are, with few exceptions, as well defined and promising as any in Victoria, and it requires only improvement in gold saving appliances to show their real value, and intelligent And
energetic prospecting to greatly increase the number."
