AGENCY.

Auckland, This day. The Supreme Court lias been occupied all the morning with the action Dalziel v. Reid.; The land in dispute is at Poverty Bay. Most of the facts are admitted by defendant, who states.that he would have given a title long ago but for the refusal of one chief to sign a deed. The evidence i& now closed. The case of Dalziel v Reid for £5000 damages, owing to failure to give a good title to land at Gisborne, has just terminated in a verdict.for plaintiff for £1800. Captain Harrison of the schooner Dauntless was convicted; and fined to-day on three counts for smuggling one cwt of tobacco upon arrival from Noumea last trip. He was fined £'100 on the first count, £25 on the second and £100 on the third. The latter count was for making a false entry at the Customs. An information for perjury has been laid against one witness in the case, who denied all knowledge of the affair although it was afterwards testified that lie helped to remove the tobacco. Wellington, This day. We have it on undoubted authority that there has been a gigantic conspiracy in Russia, though officially denied.' It was intended to assassinate Governors of fourteen provinces. Some of th« best families in the country ere implicated. Young ladies have been arrested and sent to Siberia. The inhabitants of two whole villages have also been sent there. : Sailed: Wellington, with the 'Frisco outward mail and Southern and Wellington Prize-firing Representatives. Westpout, This day. On Sunday night a cargo boat which

wfis returning from the Halcyon claim, up tho Mohilrinui river, capsized, and five men were drowned; one escaped. Hokitika, This day. The first batch of immigrants for the new settlement at Jackson's Bay left yesterday by the steamer Waipara. Oamabu, Monday. A sad accident occurred at the Waitaki Biver yesterday. Jennie Anderson, tho magician, and troupe were crossing to the Canterbury side. The male members of the party walked across the unfinished bridge, but an express containing Jennie Anderson and all the properties attempted to ford above the.bridge, being piloted by a ferryman on horseback. The vehicle got into deep water, and capsized. The driver was washed to a pile of the bridge, and rescued Miss Anderson (Mrs Morton) twice He grasped her while floating under the bridge, but her clothing gave way, and she was drowned. The inquest was held to-day. Everything belonging to the troupe was loit in the river, including a box containing money, Ac. The express horse and two performing dogs belonging to the troupe were drowned., The general feeling here is that crossing the river, except in a ferry boat of by bridge, should be at once prohibited.
