PUMPING ASSOCIATION.
Since Saturday the gas in the Big Pump shaft has receded considerably, and Mr Black is now having the lower plungerclacks changed at the 400 feet level. So far there is room for congratulation ; but the resumption of sinking is yet precluded, and will be until the foul air is got
rid of. The sinking so far has advanced with wonderful rapidity, considering the stoppages which have been made various causes; and it is to be hoped HjKhat this gag will* not be a barrier to the *"successful progress of the work, since all Jhining on the field may be said to revolve cvSound this greater-centre. . Had the Asan. up, shaft alongside the present main, to carry an up current of air, no difficulty, I tm told, in the shape of gas would be experienced. To start such a work now, however, when the main shaft is dowu over 400 feet is scarcely to be thought of. Under existing circumstances, some Other method of combating with the gas will have to be found.
