Our Mining Reporter.
: ; ; ..;::;\ : the week..,. ''' Jl. Your mmmg reporter, and perhaps everyone else, is somewhat out of reckoning about the week. On Thursday (Christmas Ere) the gold, return for the fore part of the week was published, and a very respectable return it Was, but it was larger thati otherwise it wolild- have been owing to the various companies and parties having made a final cleaning up before the holiday. Operations for a few days will be'discontinued, mining, will go into that sleep which overtakes it annually* and will, let us hope, awake refreshed and vigorous. The brokers have departed from the sbene (the'corner) of the speculative ways and money making tricks; and they were doubtless glad of the excuse, for very little fish has come to their net« of light. Ifet us hope jthat new year will disclose a new tide in the affairs of the Thames; and;that it may have an era of prosperity. So far as actual mining on this field is conceived, there is nothing actually forlorn about the condition. To anybody who takes the trouble to watch the returns of goldr it will be obvious that there are many lucky ones on.the field. Tributers and those holding private claims and working it. themselves have nothing to complain" of;? Good _re turns have frequently to be recorded. Then we have the Manukau, the Queen of Beauty, and| others. But; unfortunately, it takes more* than this to put life into a large district that' has hitherto passed through .times of delirious speculatiou. : These periodsT howevei', r have the effect of causing an unhealthy reaction, and it is to be hoped that v. while the opening of Ohinemuri shall increase our prosperity, it will be on a; solid footing.
