The Cure meeting lapsed for want of a quorum. Wellington, Yesterday. . The Post publishes Mr Travers' reasons for declining the appointment of Attorney General. He states that when he accepted the offer made him he was not aware that the Attorney-General was " under the direction" of the Minister of Justice, and in effect treated as being a civil servant within the provisions of the Civil Service Act, 1866, and "unless the position," he says," be admitted by the Government to be such as is evidently contemplated by the Attorney-General Act, 1866, I should not feel myself justified in making the considerable sacrifice of income which my acceptance of ike office would entail opon me." * The following are the ships and irami-: grants forwarded to New Zealand by the Agent-General during September:—The Assaye, for Auckland, 419 souls ; the Cospatrick, for Auckland, 429; the Geraldine Paget, for Canterbury, 395 ; the Clarence, for Hawke's Bay, 348; the Carnatic, for Marlborough, 297; the Crusader, for Canterbury, 374. 150,000 acres of the Fielding block, town and rural sections were sold by auction to-day. There was keen competition for the town sections, especially among people from the district. In several instances the upset price was doubled, £40 being paid for quarter acres. Rural sections were in less demand, the great bulk being withdrawn. The prices obtained all round were considered very high. Dttnedin, This day.
