The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1874.

We feel that we may at last congratulate our readers on the successful termination of negociations for the opening of Ohinexnuri. The meeting of Natives was • ' continued yesterday, and, apparently, very little progress was made; the discussion Laying been brought to an abrupt termination by intelligence that one Haimona Fgarona was "sick unto death" at Parawai. Te Hira and others hurried off at once to see the dying chief, and it was feared that an indefinite delay would take place. But a favorable turn arose out of, or immediately followed, these circumstances. Haimona died, and his friends have been mourning him to-day in their ' usual manner, by a tangi. Whether this sudden and unexpected event had any direct influence upon the obstructionists we cannot say; but we learn that Te Hira and certain other influential chiefs invited Sir Donald McLean to meet them at MrTaipari's house last night, where, they formally withdrew all opposition on their part to the opening. In another column we publish an authorised- version of what took placewbieh will save us the trouble of going

into details here. A short time will elapse before the opening actually takes place. In the meantime the miners may go about keeping their holiday in their usual fashion, and recruit for the rush which will probably take place as soon as arrangements are completed . and Ohinemuri proclaimed open to miners.
