The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1874.
The beautiful lithographic portraits of Madame Arabella. Goddard, to be saen in lome of the shop windows in Qrahamstown and Shortland, may be accepted as an intimation that the great pianist, with her company, intends to give a grand concert at the Thames. If so, fall particulars will, of course, be duly advertised. The agent, Mr B.S. Smythe, arrived by the Hauraki) yesterAt the American Theatre last evening the Magnet Variety Troupe played to a fair house, as usual the majority being the dually natives of the soil. The performances in all of their-respective characters were worthy of the applause which they elicited; but the young . Masters Hunter, the junior, especially, who is quite a little boy,, displayed real merit in their fetHa upon the horizontal bar. The negro and other melodies gave great satisfaction. Thi Lalla Rookh left Shortland wharf for Ohinemuri this day at noon. She carried a good number of passengers, considering that by reason of the native talk the attraction for humans is just now centred in Shortland, The cases of appeal against the Borough Council were again adjourned to-day for a week. These cases have been pending for some time now. They have become almost a necessity to the proper appearance of the weekly civil list. The showery weather to-day culminated in a fearful downfall of rain about; a quarter to two o'clock, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The rain fell in a deluge, and in the Bhort space of time it continued created a flood. On the low lying ground at the back of our office there were six inches of water, and the heavy rainfall only lasted fifteen or twenty minute*.
In ordinary conversation sometimes the temper of the Maoris regarding the Ohinemuri queetion may be pretty accurately arrived at. Aby no means despicable individual expressed himself thusly a day ago. In answer to the query " When will Ohinemuri be opened ? " he said sententiously, " When Te Moananui is all right, then will the land be open." This was brief, but carried with it a volume of meaning.
