A New Zealand Gazbttb of the 10th
December contains the proclamation by His Excellency Sir James Fergusson bringing into operation " The Inspection of Machinery Act, 18 "4," in the districts of Auckland, Taranaki, Wellington, Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and Westland. The same Gazette contains a notification of the appointment of Joseph Nancarrow, Esq., to bo Chief Inspector of Machinery for the Colony of New Zealand tinder the above Act, such appointment to date from the tab: November. It will be desirable to hare the provisions of this Act at once enforced, and the Chief Inspector might judiciously commence his inspection at the Thames, As one of the Commissioners who conducted the enquiry into the Kuranui boiler explosion, Mr Nancarrow has a good idea of the machinery in use on the Thames. He is perfectly aware, of the fact that very often owners and managers are tempted to keep their machinery going when 'prudence would suggest a temporary stoppage. Legislation having now been brought to bear upon the matter, it will be the duty of the Inspector to see that the risks run by employes About machinery are reduced to the minimum.
