Tax annual meeting of the Borough Council, which took place at noon to-day in terms of the Act, was got over in a few minutes. All the Councillors were present, but, including the representatives of the press, there were not half-a-dozen other persons in attendance. The statements of accounts for the year (reference to which has already been made in these columns) were passed without discussion. The only business besides this was the election of Mayor, and Mr William Davies was reelected without opposition. There had been a talk of opposition, but none was offered j an understanding having been come to, apparently, that the reelection of Mr Davies would be more satisfactory than a split in the Council, which migkt hare followed, the nomination of any other candidate or candidates for the mayoral chair. Cr. Renshaw, in proposing the reelection of Mr Davies, expressed his disapproval of a practice which has obtained is some boroughs, namely, electing the same person for- several consecutive years; and the sentiments he gave :SSS3io*t- t<v.-Q.S- tliose i t«!w<*a : n^"atpd
him in proposing Mayor t>avies appeared to be "slsared by the oilier Councillors. These were tLat Cr. jDavies had done his duty well for the term he had been in office, and that Councillors could not do better than give him the chance of a full term of office. A general concurrence in this idea resulted in the reelection of Mr Davies to the office of Mayor?
Thb Education Board meeting yesterday resulted in cancelling the proclamation of the school districts. A telegram was received to-day conveying this intimation, and advertisements will appear to-morrow t<y the eflFect that things will be left as they, are. This will be in every way ■atisfactory, as it will afford time for the School Committees to consult with their constituents and obtain an expression of opinion as to the desirability or otherwise of amalgamation under present circumstances.
