The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1874.

The statements of the accounts of the Thames Borough Council up to the 18th of November were laid on the table of the Council Chamber for inspection by the ratepayers and others interested today. From this document we learn that the assessment is expected to realise £2796 2s, and that the sum of £906 3s lOd was anticipated to be realised from the old rates struck by tbe Eauaeranga. Waibtahi and Tararu Boards, and handed to the Borough for collection. Since the Municipality has been in operation contracts to the amount of £4859 17s sd, have been entered upon, tor the greater part, of which the Council is indebted to the Bank «f New Zealand for overdraft. The total amount of receipts for the period is £7442 15s 9d, which is made up of the oyerdraft referred to, £4589 2s 3d, sums received from the arrears of Highway District rates, money collected on account of the general rate, subscriptions in aid of works (a considerable item, viz., £612 4s) and other sources of revenue. The expenditure meets this with the exception of 14s 4d in the hands of the Treasurer. In this portion of the statement, under the head of " expended,' is an item of £113 lls. 7d, " interest on overdraft Bank of New Zealand;" a portion of which mirht have been saved to the Borough but for the posi'ion assumed by the Provincial Government towards the "infant borough." The statement of "assets and liabilities" is not, however, of such a nature as to lead to despair of municipal institutions. There are assets to the tune of £6291 6s ss, made up of unpaid rates (Bsrough), £2495 2s; vote of Provincial Council, £2250; and sundries ; while tbe liabilities of the Borough are trifling, over and above the £4589 2s 3d duo to the Bank of New Zealand; the total being £5587 6s 3d; showing a balance to the credit of the Borough. Ihc annual statements from which these figures are extracted are published m accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act, and the burgesses interested in figures had better consult the originals for details of the Borough Council's transactions during their existence as a body corporate.
