THE PARAWAI GARDENS.

A number of people found their way to these delightful pleasure grounds, and suffered no inconvenience from the sun, inasmuch as the pretty little summerhouses which surround the immense lawn held out a grateful shade. Many ladies visited the Gardens, and they of course took advantage of these shady spots, from whence they could observe the play of the sun-bescorched cricketers, who were participating in a double match—the Tradesmen first eleven against that of the Thames Cricket Club, and the second eleven of the former clubs were playing a match also. Burgess having one the toss for the Tradesmen, elected to go in, and with Wardell went to the wickets to the bowling of Robinson and Brassey. After some steady play Wardell was bowled by a boiler. Hewilt followed, and gave the bowlers some trouble, but at length fell a victim. The left-hander Hulme was well caught by Betters at the wicket next over. Paul then relieved Brassey, and bowled so well that the remaining wickets, with the exception of Cook, failed ;tb score. The innings closed for 27. The Tradesmen then took the field, the Thames Club being represented by Schofieid and Steadman. Burgess opened with the leather, Hewitt trundling iafc the other end. Schofieid was well bowled by Burgess. Steadman let out at Hewitt and hit over, and .consequeßt^y paid the penalty. Crawford and Eobin'son were partners, and runs were then made. Crawford at last hit a cross one from Burgess and lost his wicket for a well- j played 11. Paul followed, and was bowled by Hewitt. Crump joined Robinson, who made a good drive from Burgess 1. After the next ball, " how's that" was ; heard, and the skipper walked out for i 1b w. Burgess bowled Bellers by a shooter. Whitford made. 6 and was I caught in the slips.
