The Melbourne Age reports that Professor Sale, of Duntdin, who took high honors at Cambridge, both in classics and mathematics, is a candidate for the position about to be vacated by. Dr. Bromby at the Church of JSngland Grammar School. "
Mr James CaJlaghan, of th«.'firm of Messrs Callagbanjaud Co., boot importers, Melbourne, has been struck off tha list of magistrates, in consequence of certain' proceedings instituted against him by the Government for falsification of Custom House entries. ■--
The directors of the Warrnanibool: Woollen Mill Company have determined to obtain increased capital before commencing operations. The capital subscribed is £11,003, and the Castlemaine factory is estimated to costi>l2,3l9 at the outset. The Warrnambool men have decided to increase their capital ta £20,000.
At Inglewood, on the 28th October, a married woman named Watson, aged 22, and within a week of accouchement, received fatal injuries from a fire which destroyed the house she was living in. She died next morning. The Rev. Dr Bleasdkle, of Melbourne, a Roman Catholic priest, has been taking an active part in the movement for opening the Public Library, Museum, &c, on Sundays.. In the course of one of his speeches, he said he had been a priest for thirty years, had seen men in many countries and many races, and he had found everywhere that these facilities for rational enjoyment had a most beneficial effect upon religion and morality. He simply claimed for himself one thing, which was that during the twenty-four years ho had been amongst them he had striven to keep down the asperities of one set of bigots towards anether. If he had not done so he, a Roman Catholic priest, would- not have been placed, in the position which he held in connection with the Public Library and Museum, and in. his connection with those institutions he had striven to carry his opinions on tbis subject into effect. The schoolmaster Leeson, for indecently assaulting female pupils, is to be flogged thrice by the common hangman. A girl named Vincent, living at Portland, is in custody for burying her child in a water-closet. This is the third illegitimate she has had, and she is under 20 years of age.
The prophet Stevens, with half-a-dozen wires and half-a-score followers, is attempting to found a settlement at Queenscliffe.
James Phelan is in custody for attempting to commit a criminal assault on Ellen Smith. . : .
The Border Post says :—" Victorian readers may remember the detestable case of ' Blathering Bill,' who by his insidious villainy succeeded in seducing the three daughters of his employer, a farmer near Warrnambool, and leaving them outcasts and helpless in the world. A saddler named William Mitchell, of Albury, has succeeded in eclipsing ' Blathering Bill' in the number of his victims—all young and respectable girls. One of them, (not yet 19),: appeared, at the, Albury Police Court, and detailed to the bench, of magistrates the misrepresentations and promises by which her betrayer led her from the paths of virtue, and shamefully deserted her when she was about to become the mother of his child, leaving 1 her without funds or even compassion. A warrant was issued."
