The proposal to substitute cremation for interment, at Hartlepool, has provoked a riot amongst a crowd of working men. Turnbull, the solicitor who made the proposition, was followed from the Town Hall with the execrations of 2000 excited people.
A formidable strike is threatened in the cotton trade, which it is to be hoped will be averted by a spirit of mutual conciliation. For several days twenty-four mills at. Bolton have been closed, and 1300 persons were thrown out of work. Several employers then withdrew notices of reduction, and the hands resumed work, both parties binding themselves to accept award. Arbitration has also been resorted to in connection with a threatened strike in Durham, which would have affected 100,000 persons.
After a duration of six weeka the dispute between Lord Penrhyn and 3000 quarrymen was settled, and the bulk of them returned to work. Finding some concessions had been ignored, the men left the quarry en masse, ponding a guarantee from Lord Penrhyn. J^egociations are still proceeding, but the aspect of affairs is not promising. The Fife and Clackmannan lock-out still continues. Men are suffering great privations, and would submit to 15 per cent, reduction if the new byo-laws were withdrawn.
