New Plymouth, Thursday. A stiff gale was blowing the whole of yesterday. The sea in the roadstead was the roughest that has been known for years. Shoals of fish were washed ashore. The waves were as high as the Sugar Loaves at high tide: The sea washed more reclaimed land away near the proposed railway station. During the storm on Tuesday a:; house in the country was struck by lightning, doing some damage. , ;.. Nelson, # Thisday., A Fire Brigade demonstration was held ast night. The Brigades formed atorchight procession from the Port, accomanied by the Artillery Volunteers and and. They paraded the town, and then ined at the Masonic Hotel. The Suesintendent occupied the chair, and the TSyoT the vice-chair. The Governor and !aptain Simpson, of the Blanche, were vests. The Governor, in returning aanks for his health, made some very sarcastic remarks in reference to the frequency of fire, and want of appliances for extinguishing them, in Auckland. Wellington, This day. J. S. Williams, Registrar General, and Judge Weston have been holding _an enquiry into certain charges of defalcation made against an officer in the stamp department. The enquiry has just con; eluded. It 4s understood the result is that there is no foundation whatever for the charges.
