The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1874.

It has been suggested that a banquet should be given to Mr. J. Sheehan, M.H.R, at present on a visit to the Thames, in recognition of his services in promoting the Wasto Lands Act in the Assembly.

The day before yesterday Captaiu Best, Harbor Master, made some soundings off the Grahamstown Goods Wharf, in;: order to ascertain what depth of water could be obtained by the proposed extension. After carefully examining tho beach it was found that an extension of 600 feet would give an additional depth of watsr of three feet, which would immensely facilitate tho discharge of coal-laden vessels.

Ak extraordinary general meeting of the New Zealand Insurance Company was held in the company's offices yesterday afternoon. The Hon. J. Williamson presided. All tho directors and a very large number of the shareholders were prosenfc, while proxies from the shareholders in England and the Southern provinces were represented. A series of resolutions were put to the meeting and carried unanimously, to the effect that the capital of the company shall be increased to £1,000,000, by the creation of 100,000 shares of £10 each. It w»s agreed that one-half of the sew shares should be offered to the public. The details of carrying out the various arrangements were left to the board of directors, who will issue a detailed prospectus in a few days.—
