VISIT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT.
His Honor the Superintendent, accompanied by the Provincial Secretary > Mr. J. Sheehan, arrived by the Crown yesterday afternoon, and has since received numerous deputations on various public matters. '■ WHARF EXTENSION. Messrs. Errington, Rowe, Brown, Brodie, Bagnall, Sims, Souter and other gentlemen comprised a deputation which waited on the Superintendent this morning regarding the wharf extension to enable colliers to discharge their cargo with some degree of safety and despatch. His Honor informed the deputation that he ;had consulted by Mr.* Lodder on this question before leaving town, and that gentleman would be coming to the Thames to confer with Messrs. Aitken and McLaren. It would be better therefore to postpone consideration of the question for a day. The deputation accepted this view of the matter and withdrew. VOLTJNTEEE EIFLE BANGE. / A deputation consisting of Captain Murray, T.S.V., and Captain Brassey, T.N.8., waited upon his Honor the Superintendent with the view of obtaining his consent to the expenditure of an additional £150 in order to complete the new rifle range. Mr. Carpenter, M.P.C., in introducing them explained the present position of the range and the necessity for supplementing the original grant with the sum required. His Honor, in. reply, said that he was gratified to state that the Hon. the Native Minister had in reply to a telegram from him signified his willingness to sanction an expenditure of £100 on behalf the Gefneral Government, and that the remaining £50 would be given by tha Provincial Government. His Honor referred to the flattering terms which Sir Donald McLean had used when speaking of the T.S.V. and N. 8., and agreed himself in the opinion that they were two of the most efficient corps in the Colony. Major Cqfeper, who was present, expressed himself in a similar manner. Mr. Carpenter having
thanked his Honor on behalf of tko Thames Volunteeers, the deputation withdrew.
WAIOTAHI BOARD
Messrs. liowe.Brodie, and Porter, members of the Waiotalii Highway District Board waited upon his Honor the Superintendent respecting the monies to be received from the, Provincial' Government to assist in carrying on the works undertaken in the district. Mr. Rowe pointed out that the Waiotahi, since its severance from the Borough,. was almost in the position of a new Board. They had a large district and numerous roads and tracks to keep in repair, which had been done without assistance from the Government, "although the same work had previously been done by the Government. The Board thonght the Government should now give them a sum of money equal to what the expenditure for keeping these goldfields roads and tracks in repair had formerly been, and also a subsidy towards making footpaths to the school-houses of the district. It was also urged that the Government should rtnder pecuniary assistance towards completing the roads connecting the Borough and the Waiotahi District. The financial position of the Board was discussed, and the Superintendent promised to favorably consider the application of the Board, after which the deputation retired. / WAIO-KABAKA BOAD. A number of gentlemen interested in the Waio-Karaka mines, formed themselves into a deputation to request the assistance of the Government is. forming a road up the Waio-Karaka, but the business was postponed until Monday next.
