The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 1874.

Wb regret to learn that the Government do not see their way to making arrangements for a temporary mail service via San Francisco, to which they have been invited by the Government of New South Wales. It may be true, as stated, that no interuption of postal communication will take place. The Suez route is available, hut that will not compensate for the stoppage of the 'Frisco service. Business, relations of an important and extensive nature had been Opened betweem New Zealand and Californian houses, which are now abruptly terminated, or seriously interfered with' by the breakdown of the service, as these business relations cannot possibly be cultivated and extended by means of the Suez mail service. "We cannot help thinking that the Government would have done better to enter into an arrangement for a temporary service, even though it should have cost more than the imperfect service which hat so suddenly collapsed. As it it the interruption of business relations between the colony and America will take months to renew after the starting of a new line, in which considerable difficulties may arise, shipowners having two utter failures btfore their eyes. The Government may possibly be induced to alter their intentions during the recess.
