Accident at the Queen of Beauty Mine.
An accident happened at the shaft of the above mine about/seven' o'clock this morning, by which a man named Henry Roache had both his legs broken at the ankle, and received other injuries to his legs about.the shin.. A truck.was coming up from the bottom level, and Roache who had been working at the 150 feet level got on the cage'to come up. TV'hen^ about 20 feet up the shaft .the truck in the cage partly tipped an,d v jammed Roache!s legs. Trying to extricate himseif!he\got further jammed between the cage and a beam crossing'the shaft, which' broke .; both legs • ■ just "■'. above ' th|e ankle, and severely grazed his J shins'. Considerable difficulty was experi:.. enced in ' extricating, the . (man; which had to be, flone by means of -ropes from the surface. ; He was conveyed ;to the Hospital as soon as possible and attended toby Dr. Lethbridge. ■ The" tipping of the truck was caused by coming ' in con-' f act w,ith ajgmall projection, in the shaft, which the, Mini;ng:lnspector on a visit pt inspection this morning ordered- to be removed at once. Roache has the charac* ter of being a mbst careful wqrkman, but it does not seem consistent with extreme carefulness to attempt the ascent of a shaft in a cage which contains a loaded truck, although the practice may be common enough. ■ .-. ,~ - .... ■
