This day/ i In the Inspection of Machinery Bill, 1 Mr. O'Neill endeavored to introduce a I clause limiting the day's work of engine*' drivers and others in charge of machinery to eight hours, but was defeated by 23 i to 5. In the House of Representatives yesterday the Premier announced the receipts of a telegram > from England reporting a breakdown in the Californian mail service, Mr. Forbes, in London proving i himself quite unable to carry out the contract; that it was doubtful if Mr. H. H. Hall could do so; and that arrangements were trying to be made with home shipbuilder*. The matter might' not turn out to be as bad as it looked;, Mr. Sheeban moved that the law re* garding the state of land for non-payment of rates is unsatisfactory, and that the Government should draw up a measure during the recess to make the collection of rates. Supported by J. B. Brown and Major Atkinson, bearing testimony to the effect the great expense of collecting rates had in retarding settlement, and hoped the Government would consider the mat* ter. Mr. McLean said the Government would consider the matter. : Auckland, This day. At the Police Court McCabe, Mining Registrar at Coromandel, was committed to the Asylum.
