I Upon the committsl of the Immigration and Public Works Bill, a great deal of discussion took place on the sixth clause, as to the amount of short-dated debentures to'be issued out of the four millions. Messrs. Fitzherbert, T. B. Gillies and Reeves insisted that on a previous evening the Premier had given a pledge that he would accept the wish of the House not to ajfe, for authority to issue more than one million under short-dated debentures. Mr. Johnston also opposed, and all insinuated that the clause placed too much discretionary power in the hands of the treasurer, and that the stock exchange would become alarmed. They had already shown; symptoms. • ■>.?.* ; The Premier denied any cause for alarm". The Bill was the same as that of last year. In all probability they would riot require to raise money on "short-dated debentures, but it was better for the colony to entrust them with discretionary power. ■, In replying :to Mr. liolleston, the Premier said that Mr. Julian had been paid a small commission of a thousand pounds for ne*ociating the; £120,000; Messrs. Featherstoh arid/ Sergeant got nothing for their services in that direction. Messrs. Cuthbertson and Reader Wood defended the course adopted by the Premier, who had no objection to bow to the ■wishes of the House, rjbut declined ,to allow the Government to be dictated to by a few members who had passed into opposition. Mr. Cracroft Wilson defended the honor of the House, and said he failed to recollect that the Premier had given any pledge.
