DIVIDEND-PAYING MINES.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sib,—With all due deference, I cannot conceive why you do not make your mining statistics sill more complete, and give' the -Thaine's and general public something more really reliable than that sometimes published in your morning, contemporary.'Here is an; instance of either gross carelessness in the compilation of a report or a wilful intent to mislead the outside public. In the Advertiser's monthly summary I find under the heading of " dividend-paying mines " one company! that has not paid i. penny in dividends for two years, and seventeen others that have not had a divide this year. What is the good ,of such indirect misstatements ? They do the field infinite ■harm, and outsiders must think the press is a kind of white-lying to prop the Thames up. This goldfield does not want anything of the kind : its tub is quite broad enough, to stand on if s own bottom.
