The annual meeting of the Parawai Highway Board was held at the Schoolhouse last evening. \ The meeting %as convened for 7; o'clock, But it was nearly half-past before the business of the meeting .commenced.. The Eev. Mr. Wilson was voted to the chair.
The Chairman thanked the meeting for tho complimtnt paid him, and called on Mr. Crick, the Secretary, to read the report for the past year. Mr. Crick then read th« from which the following exti acts "are taken.;:— The balance to the credit of the Board is larger at the cloie of the present financial year than that of 1873, the balance to the credit of" the board now; being £69 14s s 7d. The working expenses of the board during the past year were £21 4« 2d. r No assistance was-received from* 1 the 5 Provincial Government, during the year 1874, but a sum of £200 ' will, it is expected, -be granted in aid, which will be expended on the construction of bridges dyer the Hape Creek, in Grey?street and- Brownstreet north, the Borough Council to pay half '■ the expense. n r The advisability of continuing the niairi 'road to the Kauapranga Creek has. been coiwidered, and itwas confidently hoped that the natives would dedicate the roadibr whichu negotiations are pending. ""'.'The4 main road would b« severely tested when the iron and other material was 'carried, byer it. The report was almost voluminous, and concluded with a recommendation that a vote of thanks be accorded to Mr; Allom, their late Chairman. The balance-sheet as required by Government showed that the receipts had been, up, .to the 30th, June; 1874, £478 16s 1; expenditure, £462 2s4d. In reply to a question, the Secretary said that about £60 was owing by natives for outstanding rates. ■-.■■■-- On the motion of Mr. Stoney the re- | port as read was adopted, subject to a special vote of thanks to Mr. Allom. The next business of the meeting was to fix the nature and amount of the rate for the ensuing year. ; The Chairman stated that for the ;last two years 5 per cent on the annual value had been assessed,,and had been found to be a satisfactory one. ."•..., On the motion of Mr. Stillwell seconded by Mr. Allom, the same rate was again struck. The ratepayers then proceeded to vote for trustees for the ensuing financial y«ar. r <■■' ■>■■' ~~'% '■ '"?'" r ' On a show of hands being taken there were. for Mr. Hogg 34, Mr. Miller 31, Mr. Spencer' 30, Mr. Chas. Stephenson 30, Mr. D. G. ",McDonald 20, Mr. Warmoll 11, Mr. C. F. Dean 8. The Chairman declared "the -jfirsli 'five-' candidates duly elected. .;. Messrs iWarmoll and Vincent were elected auditors for the ensuing year. : Mr.: Allom returned thanks for the special vote of thanks .accorded him, stating that-it was a pleasure fQ|Jjini to do anything for the benefit of the custrict. Mr. Spencer also acknowledged the vote of thanks given the Jate Board. = N Mr. EStillwtll asked^Mr. Allom- if"he would read the clauses of the Act relative to Highway/Boards. , Mr. Allom said there were over one hundred of them, i •; A ratepayer remarked that as it was getting late they had better 'come^ in""th 6 -morning and hear them read,, they could then make a day of it.
