John Brooks, produce merchant, Manse-street, was lost in the snow at Waikari last night. The body has since been found. Pobt Chalmees, Tuesday. Andrew McKinnon has been returned Mayor by a majority of 21. votes over the other candidate, Inncs. This day. Arrived: Sam Mendel, ship, from London; 70 days out, with 371 passengers.
Wellington, This day. At the evening sitting of the House of Representatives a clause was introduced by the Premier in tho Telegraph Bill, for guarding witnesses giving evidence against any persons improperly divulging the contents of telegrams against any penalty. The Bill was reported. A long discussion arose in committee on the Regulation of Mines Bill, but the BUI was reported with slight amendment. Conveyancing Ordinance and . Offences' against Persons Act Amendment Bills were passed. The House rose at 10 p.m. In the Legislative Council, a motion was carried that a committee be appointed to inquire into matters respecting the Ward-Chapman telegrams. At a meeting of the City Council last night it was resolved 'that all streets in the city bo formed and constructed without delay,, and that .a preliminary sum of twenty thousand pounds be raised by debentures On a loan. It is stated to be the public wish, that the rates should not be lowered as proposed but increased for the purpose of carrying out further city improvements.
