OUR VOLUNTEERS.
The following is a copy of a telegram received by Captain Murray, Thames Scottish, from; Major Gordon, Inspector Militia and Volunteers, regarding the Snider rifles, promised to the Volunteers by Government. To Capt. Murray, Scotch Rifle Volunteers, Shprtland:-T-The Snider Jtifles were shipped in March or April. I have not heard yet of their arrival. They are medium size—stocked to muzzle ; steel barrels and sword-bayonets. The' firing exercise of 1870 is applicable- I saw the pattern in Wellington, and I believe they will prove to be weapons of precision.— W. Gordon, Major, , " . ; We hay« much pleasure in giving publi* city to the above as very little appears to be known here about the new weapon. We understand that the Snideri will only be supplied to efficient members of com* panics, that is those having a thorough knowledge of squad and company drill, and from the same remarks publicly made lately by Major Gordon on the non efficiency in these particulars of some of our celebrated shootists unless they attend their elementary drills prior to isius of the arms they find themselves left out in the cold.
