GOLD RETURNS.

The following parcels of' gold were lodged at the Bank of New Zealand during the week :— Ozs. dwts. Old Whau - - 676 10 Bright Smile - - 900 0 Bird in Hand - - 284, 0 Kuranui - - 130 0 Golden Crown - - 63 0 Pacific - - - 14 12 2068 2 The Queen of Beauty, Moanataiari, and Alburnia have yet to come in. Shipped by the Bank of New Zealand during the week, 19640z5.

The following should have appeared in yesterday's issue:— THE CENTRAL ITALY. I went down the mine yesterday with the manager to see what was doing, as I hear a crushing will be commenced as soon as a battery is at ■ liberty. The works are confined for the present to the lowest level, and Mr Comes must be complimented on the judgment'he is displaying in carefully working the mine. The lode, or rather reef, at this level is a clear, well-defined body of stone about three feet thick, part of which gives some very nice specimens, and the general stun, from the appearance of the reef should turn out well; but as the battery plates are the best verdict givers I must leave it to them. The mine is remarkably well ventilated, and, below the lowest level the works are as dry as above. The number of leaders in this mine are a 'caution, yet Mr Comes informs me that many of them are well worth following for the gold. He is now putting in some cross«cut3 through some most likely looking country for gold, full of mundics and stringers. There are about 7Olbs. of picked stuff on hand.
