In the Legislative Council, Mr. Waterhouse's speech on the indebtedness of the colony was mild as compared with his previous remarks, the general inference being that though the indebtedness had not advanced further than the colony could bear, it had gone as far as was prudent. The chief busines of the evening was the Forest Reserves Bill. The Premier moved the'second reading in; a speech of two hours and a quarter, and quoted an immense mass of statistics regarding forest conservation and its effect upon climate,-soil afad rivers; effects of denudation of forests upon countries in pa,st years in rendering them uninhabitable; i also statistics regarding the exceedingly large profits derived -from the State forests of Prussia, Bavaria, and other European countries. In the course of his remarks he said it must be a question of questions for New Zealand. He could imagine New Zealand covered with forests being more valuable than New Zealand covered with works of man. The debate was adjourned till Friday. The Civil Service Amendment Bill was, read a I second time.
Auckland, Th,is,clay. William Bartley, barrister, son of Mr. Bartley, formerly Speaker of the Legislative JCouticil^ was found in some outbuilds ings of his/residence at Woodside with his brains blown out by a double-bar-selled gun, which hsd evidently been inserted in his mouth. It is supposed that low spirits, from expectation of another attack of asthma under which he suffered, caused the deed.
