I. was at tnis/date thut an •musing incident occurred :—On the evo of publication an ■ accident happened in the Herald office; it >as no other than the •'squabbling" or turning into " pie," or entire cpnfMSibn of tlie.whole raass of letters cons'itutinga column of that paper. Young Harris was thei unlucky : author of this catastrophe. What vas to be done ? The paper muat be got ready for the pest, or nmrmurs of discontent f%ould com* from subscribers in every quarter, far and neaY. 'A happy thought flashed' across the' mind of t>e ingenious Philips. He instructedthe printer to maka up a colutrn' of standing "pic,'' jumbled together in inoit admirable disorder as every letter was ; and at the head of the perplexing conglomeration, lie^penned a nbie to'; this effect :-rThat just ds the Herald was going to ;pres*, fan-express from Holland had been received; which being in the original Dutch, thb editor had not time to translate; but lie promised an English verain in the en»uing week's paper. .It is needless to say that the translation never appeared; although many years aftrr the event, one of the Herald eubi ijcribers, living in a secluded village in Derbyshire, who had preserved the paper containing the Dutch express (and spent a'l his spare cash in-vain over Dutch lexicons), gravely requested Sir V. Philips to favor him with the promised translation.'
