ST. GEORGE'S SCHOOL.
A reporter Vislied theaboye school recently- and. gathered the: following ■■i-fr-(Mr Schofield, the. master of Sk.George's, 'School, gives a most favorafcle.'"repoft of the state of the school, and says that notwithstanding the unfavorable state* of the weather,4;he attendance is tery good, 'averaging 85 daily~f .of course in the siimmer the attendance rate much, higher.. Miss Bennett assists Mr Schofield in the instruction of the girls, and also gives lessons in plain and ornamental «evring. From the books used by some of the pupils, they must be very well advanced in their education, a course perhaps, preparatory to some higher, class school^ fThe Eev. Mr. Lush, attend* twice a week to • address and advise the children, but -it is not compulseirj that any pupil shall remain while hs is giving religious admonitions. Although St. George's School is nominally attached to the Church of England,- the children of nearly all creeds attend. The youngsters seemed happy and cheerful, and to have a love for, not dread of their teachers. The school building ss.Aly wants a stove. It would be most acceptable this cold weather—a cold slate and pencil not being very conducive-to perfection in caligraphy. The" play-grbuadj also, wants fencing and draining. It is understood that Mr. Schofield pays a rental of £20 per annum for the use of the room. Should that be, especially when the matters of other schools have a school house free of all charge. Other countries and provinces are a long way ahead of Auckland- in making their school houses attractive to the scholars, by-attention ;to their com-: fort; ■ The interior of the rooms "are betterr-mot. such dismal halls aa most of our buildings are at present. We seem to think that anything -vrnll do for a school house. Why should this" be?
