NAVAL BRIGADE BALL.

The causes which militated against tho success'of the military pageant yesterday were; felt in a greater degree last night in the birthday ball. The steady downpour of rain—the concentrated discharge of the heavens after a long continued, dry season—completely and effectually prevented many from being present at Hie above ball; and it is really a matter for surprise tliaL there wore found ladies brave enough to face the elements in order to be present at tho bail. It was a sad disappointment to many who would have been present had the weather been even a little nioro propitious. It is but fair to say that those who did iac.e the wind and the rain seemed, to forget the contending elements outside wheu. once within the charmed circle of the dancers, and in sound of the capital music pro-' 1 vided, and that they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The company was small, but did not sliow a disproportion of gentlemen; consequently those present were enabled to enjoy themselves as :much. as if there had been a large Assemblage. The first portion of the programme having been finished .an adjournment was made to the supper-room, .the dining hall,of the Pacific, and by this time the company had increased considerably, about fifty couples partaking of au excellent supper provided by Mr Curt s, after which dancing was resumed with a zest to which the cold outside conduced. Although not as successful as former gatherings of the.Naval Brigade the ball last night, left nothing to be found fault with by those who braved the£'weather to be present, and the brigade deserve praise for carrying out the affair so spiritedly under, discouraging circumstances. . ,
