Attempted Suicide.
A determined attempt at suicide was -made at an early hour this morning, accompanied by circumstances, of self mutilation of a most inexplicable character, the wretched victim being a man named Thomas Waterworth, in the 1 employ of Mr Ehrenfried lately, although usually following the occupation of a miner. Waterworth was lodging at the Claremont Hotel, Karaka Creek, and was discovered this morning with his throat cut, the windpipe having been severed. He had also inflicted ten wounds on his breast, but none of them of a severe nature. The police were communicated with, and the injured man was conveyed to the hospital. The cut and stabs were inflicted with a common, clasp knife, and from the nature of the wound it seems, almost miraculous how the jugular vein escaped. Waterworth was. a long time mining at Tararu, and it is said was a married, man. A consultation of the medical staff was held and the man's case was considered hopelessr—no cause is assigned for the .commission of /the rash act.
