GOLDFIELDS WORKS.
Messrs. J. Brown, M.P.C., W. Souter, A. Brodie and Adam Porter waited upon the Provincial District Engineer, Mr. J. > McLaren, this morning, with regard to the formation of a sleigh track from the head of the tramway in Tinker's Gully to the head of the gully. The deputation represented that the district to which communication was proposed to be opened was a promising one, but its progress was retarded for want of access. As an instance of the difficulties in the way of getting to the head of the gully it was stated that the material used in the mines and batteries had cost from £5 to £20 per ton for carriage; whereas, if the proposed road were made, material could be taken the whole length for £1 per ton—namely, 14i per ton to the end of the tramway. and 6« for the remainder of the road ; besides* which another great advantage would be gained: the claims would be »ble to avail themselves of the cheap crushing offered by batteries down the creek.—The deputation then brought another matter under the notice of the Engineer—namely, the extension of the water supply.—Mr. A. Porter wished for information as to whether a sum of money had been placed on the Estimates for extending the walsr supply to the Waiotahi Ureek and other chickly-populated neighborhoods, £i promised by His Honor the * Superintendent some time ago.—Mr. McJJaren concurred in the desirability of the "works, and promised to communicate, jyith SLe G-overament on the matter; and it was decided to write to Mr. Brown, ifLPtC, asking' him to bring these mat-" tttf before the Exeoutive, which Mr., Brown hM promued to cto.
