THE LONG DRIVE.

The amount of gold banked to-day from this company's mine was 169 ounces. This is a long way below their usual monthly average, but the months' crushing has been a most broken? bne-i The mine manager, Mr "Walker, is about trying the merits of an invention, which if not his own, is new to the field. The object of it is for the better; saving of particles of gold,, and other heavy substances that may contain gold after it has passed over; the .battery plates and blankets strokes. This is to the Thames a new feature in gold saving apparatus, it is actually a long cradle to be rocked by steam power, but so little pojver: is requiied'in the rocking that a child may easily perform the work. This new cradle is to be lined with blankets, audit is thought that the rocking motion ot the cradle will better conduce'to keep the nap of the blankets erect, also free them from : accumulating too much grit, and thus save; any...free gold that may have escaped. It will be interesting to watch the progress of this appliance, as there is no doubt that i n consequence of the presence of so much base minerals in the Thames, stone, many ounces of gold get away notwithstanding all the care that is takenio save it. Very few efforts in the shape of new inventions have been made in this direction. Selling tailings at a good figure is all very well, but most mine managers wish to get all they can from the' stuff they crush at once, and think the less tailings are worth:the better. .-,.••■.,■/ , ..■ '■'■■ .\,i.. ; ■■ . ■','■
