CHORAL SOCIETY'S CONCERT.

I The concert held at the Academy of Music last evening was one of. the most Jilcceytf^WWif W W-bßft 'ou| pleasure to listen to at the Thames ; ana' \t is much .to ,)be: (regretted) that, tbf fojf clemency of the weather, combined with the counter attraction of the Theatre lioyal, resulted in caukini a comparktively fmall, but very appreciative audience; and we feel assured! that had the people generally been aware of the treat in store, few who delight in high*ckisg ; music would have been absent.* ""tVMd'been fully predicted that some hitch or breakdown woWa^Ba»Vlb'utßM«Xwainot - the case, the pieces and solo? in every in'stance being carefully and effectively tendered. JTlie proceeds are intended to [supplement the Benevolent Fund of the iSir Walter Scott Lodge. The programme jwasi an excellent one, commencing" with jthe recitative, " Comfort Ye My People," !by Mr. Wright, who also sang the air, 1" Every Valley shall Be Exalted," with a

jcare and an expression which fairly earned for him the plaudits which followed. Mrs. Kilgour sang the mezzo-soprano air, " But Thou didst not Leave his Soul in ,He.l," in a style which proved ,that, bad' she not 'been suffering from a -bron- ! chial affection, the piece could not have Ibeeu placed, in better hands. The air " I Know ithat my Redeemer Liveth" was ! sweetly rendered by Mrs. Payne, and with great care and finish. The tenor 'solo, "Behold, and see if there be any ' sorrow," by Mr. Austin, fully sustained the reputation of that gentleman as a | finished performer. The choruses were [excellently well rendered, and we can 'only express par surprise that so short an i amount of practice by the members of the | Choral Society should hare them to acquit themselves so wcll^ considering the ( nature ofj the^ selections : the whole, we ,inay ( »i,Ytnj)a*gant, being taken from the Messiah. , The second part opened with the madrigal" O'er Desert Flams;" afterihe conclusion of which the Eev. J. Hill tendered therfbanks of the members of the Sir Walter Scott Lodge to the members of the 'Choral Societyfor their kindness in devoting the proceeds of the concert to the Benevolent Fund of the .bodge. l He also tbaaked the audience for their attendance. Mr. "White followed with ht£hd Sea is Merry England'*,*' in his uiua'ly effective style.
