SUTHERLANDS.
TEACHER FAREWELLED. On February 22nd a record number of pupils, parents and friends gathered at the SutAerlanda School to bid farewell to their teacher, Miss Stewart, who is severing her connection with the schcpl on promotion to take up duties at Samoa. At an interval in the dancing, after supper had been (handed round, Mr Blackwood, chairman, expressed regret at Miss Stewart’s departure, after 16J years spent among them, and called upon Mr W. Wall, one of the oldest past chairmen of the committee, to make a presentation, which took the form ct a handsome suit case and travelling rug suitably inscribed. Mr Wall made mention of Miss Stewart’s great assistance to all and everything in connection with the school, also of the great influence a teacher had over tlie lives of the children.
Other speakers wore: Messrs Black and Oed (past chairmen), D. Annett, and H. Wall (an old pupil of the school). All spoke in like strain, and hoped for Miss Stewart’s return at the end of 'her term.
Apologies were received from Messrs N. McLeod and D. O’Sullivan.
After the singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” Miss Stewart suitably replied, and spoke of her life among the children and her regret at leaving _ them. Dancing was resumed, Mrs Casey and Mr W. Crawford kindly supplying music, and Mr Moffatt acting as M.C. Mr P. Hunter contributed several songs, which were much appreciated. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne”, closed a most enjoyable evening.
