HUNTING.

MEET AT PENTLOAV. Tho opening meet of the South Canterbury bounds at the Alastcr’s residence, Pentlow, was one of the best opening days had for many years. Although tho day was really too hot tor hunting, the going was, splendid alter the ruins of last month, and as the day advanced scent improved, eliding up with a really good run. It is usual ‘on the opening day for much critical inspection of horses and hounds to bo in evidence, and Saturday was no exception. There is the looking over of the old horses to see iiow .they have summered; then one passes to' the young horses that are out lor the first time, and it is always interesting to see whether one’s opinions of tlie horses out for tho first time are correct or not as the season progresses. Huntsman Shaw had both his hounds and horses in splendid condition. The pack worked well, and wherever scent held hunted well. It •was a great pleasure to tho older; members to see an old follower out after an absence of some years, and that bis dash bad not diminished. Hounds were thrown off in a field above the homestead. A bare moved off east across three paddocks, and then over tlie rape, where sheep crossed the line. Scent not bolding, hounds were unable to pick up the line. Another run across a few of the Pentlow paddocks followed, the quarry swinging south into Air AlacPherson’s, and circling some turnips, made back into Pentlow.. Continuing the circle, bounds again crossed into Air AlacPherson’s, where they ran clear out of scent at the back of bis homestead.

Luncheon', provided by the Master and Mrs Orbcll, was much appreciated, and hounds were taken down to a; stubble and grass, where a hare very soon showed up. Running across three paddocks, and turning into Mr F. Morrison’s, she ran through, his homestead and back into Pentlow, and boat the pack in the grassy creek foil a short time, but was finally pushed out, taking the same line again, into Mr Morrison’s, and back into Pentlow. Then she made for the road, and hounds running from scent to view, registered the first kill of the season on the road. It is worth noting that it is many years since the Hunt had a kill on the opening day. Drawing the paddocks on the higher downs across the Valley road, another hare gave a pretty hunting run of some 24 miles, across the Pentlow paddocks, and Mr A Miller’s, finally saving herself in a. thistly paddock, which proved to be alive with hares, and the hounds had to be whipped off. Excellent afternoon tea at the Pentlow homestead was the finish of a very good opening day. Those out were:—The Master (Mr C. L. Orboll), on Across; Huntsman (J. Shaw), on Royalty; Whip (I.
