BLACK CHILD.
DISCLAIMED BY FATHER. By Telojrrnr»li—Tress Association. AUCKLAND, April 13. A maintenance case of a most-un-usual nature came before the Police j Court this morning, when a sea captain made application for cancellation of an order for the maintenance of a child. The order was made ten years age,, and was for 25s per week, the child having been sent to a State homo. However, the order has since been reduced, and latterly it had been for 10s per week. In support of tbo application, Mr Gatenbv stated that the applicant had been supporting the child, which was black, although he knew full well that it was not his own child. His wife was a white woman also, and for tho sake of appearances he had been maintaining it. Tt was not until recently that he was able to prove that the chi'd was not his. Counsel produced an affidavit from a medical man, stating that the child was palpably black, and had very little European blood in it. Sergeant Calwcll, who appeared for the police and the Education Department, stated that arrears amounted to £’2,S. These should he paid if possible. Mr Hunt. S.M.. in cancel ing the order, expressed the opinion that the order should never have been made.
