MAORI RESERVE.

’ PROPOSED PURCHASE BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. J h last night’s meeting of the i imaru Borough Council, Uio report ol tho Maori reserve purchase committee was presented. The committee consisted of the Mayor and Councillors Saltertlnvaitc and Benstcad. Tliev reported as follows:

The committee inspected the reserve, ;md finally decided to recommend the Council, in the event of the loan poll being carried, to form a road along the .southern boundary, and to endeavour to get a sulnvay under tho railway to connect to Caroline Bay, for motor and general traffic, and to sell sections on tho north side of such proposed road and along the To Weka. Street frontage of tho reserve, and to apply the' proceeds in and towards purchasing a reserve elsewhere for the use of the Jioroug!; residents. The owners of laud on Che south side of tho proposed road should bo asked to contribute towards tho cost of the formation of tho road. Tbo committee also recommended the Council to raise a loan for the actual purchase money (.€9750) only, and not to include anything for improvements, etc. The Mayor said he hoped tho loan would bo carried. .11- this reserve, was secured it would servo Tirnaru in the matter of recreation reserves for a great many years. fn reply to Councillor Hurt, Councillor Sutterthwaite said that if tho reservo were dealt with as proposed it would be a lung for the people of 'Tirnaru, and lie did not think a better one eonld be obtained. He, would like every Councillor to walk over it and seo what a beautiful place i» is. The proposed road would give another means of access to tbo Bay and thereby reduce tbo congestion of motor traffic, as well as tile danger arising from it:. Attractive ns the Bay now is, if this reserve were acquired and planted, and a road made leading from the northern end of the Bay, under the railway, and up to To Weka Street, Tiinaru would have the prettiest waterfront in New Zealand. Councillor Cbitloek endorsed Councillor Satfertliwaite’s remarks, and .said Hint the formation of flic proposed road made all the difference to the proposal in his estimation. Councillor Benstend said that if this reserve were acquired mid the road put through as proposed, Caroline Bay would then have as line a front as any of the English watering places. Tirnaru was blessed with a heaiitilul climate, and the Bay was probably tho best in tho Southern Hemisphere. He thought it would be a great mistake if the reserve were not acquired. The report was adopted.
