The Rugby Union committee discussed tho forthcoming Maori tour of France. It was stated that the Union was not concerned with the tour in any way, and no representative matches would be played, but, subject to the Union receiving proper assurances that tlie financial arrangements of the tour were in accord with tlio amateur laws of the game, it was announced that there would be no objection to English county and club sides playing' against the Maoris. Tho Rugby season opened on Saturday, though championship fixtures will not commence- until a later date. Petono and Poneko met in the “Tom Cross” benefit match. Poncke led in tho first spell by 6-0. In tho second half, assisted by tho wind, Petono ran up a good score. Mark Nicliolls kicked a goal from a maid::, converted two tries scored by others, and himself scored two tries ami converted one — a total of fifteen points out of 21.
