MEET AT FAIRLIE.

The South Canterbury Hunt'bold tho opening meet in the I'airho district on Tne.sday, at Melville Downs, and although tho weather was unsettled a. good field of followers turned up and a good day’s sport was enjoved. Shortly after eleven the hounds threw oil in a. field near Mr ,o’Beillv s homestead, wliieh proved blank, but, on crossing to another field they viewed a, hare which made for salety in pro-. indited country. Soon afterwards the pack picked up a fresh scent and were soon rii full cry,' but scent was patchy, and alter a short run they checked. On working down the ridge they picked up the scent again, and travelling along the road at a great speed, crossed on to Black's, swung to the right, and passing through the homestead nil to a field of turnips, turned to the left again, heading for the Clayton Itoad. Puss turned up tins road towards the hills for some distance before turning left-handed in to Jones's property and made for another field of turnips, where the pack were cheeked. However, they picked up (he scent again and heading for the road once more crossed into Campbell's, through Boyle's and Black’s and hack to Campbell’s before scent lifted and was lost, after giving the field an excellent run for several miles over a variety of wire fences. The hounds were then packed and all made for Campbell's homestead for lunch. Alter lunch, Mr Campbell, on behalf of the Melville Downs settlers,' welcomed the Master and the members of the Clul) to the district, and said how much they enjoyed having them there that day. It was quite a, novelty, and he hoped that they would return again next year. The Master (Mr C. B. Orliell) on behalf of the Club, thanked the farmers for allowing them to limit over their property, and said it. was clue to them that the Club was able lo carry on the hunting. He appreciated Mr Campbell's' welcome. and hoped to be able to hunt there again in the future.
